Why buy this course?

Our Basic Carpet Cleaning course consists of five modules:

  1. Introduction to Carpet Cleaning.
  2. Fibre Cleaning Characteristics.
  3. Basic Chemistry.
  4. Pre-Inspection & Preparation.
  5. Hot Water Extraction.

This course begins with Introduction to Carpet Cleaning, where students learn the importance of fibre identification as the foundation for all cleaning work. The module explores natural, synthetic, and reconstituted fibres, their construction forms, and the key differences in durability, colourfastness, and cleanability. Practical techniques such as the burn test and other simple fibre identification tests are covered, giving students the confidence to recognise fibre types and adjust cleaning methods safely. By the end of this section, learners understand that accurate fibre identification is essential for setting customer expectations and preventing damage.

The second module, Fibre Cleaning Characteristics, focuses on the cleaning tolerances of different fibre groups. Students are introduced to Nation Training’s Fibre Cleaning Characteristics Matrix, which outlines pH ranges, temperature limits, and potential risks such as dye bleed, fibre weakening, or surface distortion. This knowledge ensures that technicians match chemistry and methods to each fibre type, minimising risk and maximising results. Attention is also given to the unique vulnerabilities of protein, cellulose, and polymer fibres, reinforcing the importance of tailoring approaches to the substrate.

The Basic Chemistry module develops a practical understanding of soil types and the chemistry needed to remove them. Learners study the four main categories of soils — dry, water-soluble, oily, and dyes — along with their combinations and binding mechanisms. The role of detergents and solvents is explored in detail, including how micelles work to emulsify oils and why WoolSafe-approved detergents are critical for natural fibres. By the end of this unit, students are able to categorise soils, select the right cleaning agents, and recognise when advanced stain removal is required.

The fourth module, Pre-Inspection & Preparation, trains students to conduct thorough site and fibre assessments before cleaning begins. Emphasis is placed on identifying pre-existing damage, colour loss, soiling issues, and installation vulnerabilities. Students learn structured inspection processes, risk assessment, and customer communication strategies designed to protect both client and technician. Safety on the job is also covered, including hazard identification, correct use of protective equipment, and preparation of the job site to ensure efficiency and compliance with workplace health and safety standards.

Finally, Hot Water Extraction provides hands-on training in the industry’s most widely recognised professional cleaning method. Students compare cleaning systems under AS/NZS 3733:2018 and learn the professional choice of pre-spray and rinse extraction. The module covers dry soil removal, detergent application, wand technique, moisture control, and effective waste disposal. Learners are shown how to prevent common risks such as over-wetting, dye runs, and browning while achieving superior cleaning results. The course concludes with guidance on professional conduct, customer service, and leaving a lasting positive impression.

The Basic Carpet Cleaning course is suitable for new entrants to the carpet cleaning industry as well as existing cleaners seeking a structured foundation in professional techniques. It is designed for individuals with little to no prior experience who want to learn the fundamentals of fibre identification, chemistry, pre-inspection, and safe cleaning methods. The course is also well-suited to those planning to start their own cleaning business, as it provides the core knowledge needed to deliver reliable results and avoid costly mistakes. Additionally, it benefits experienced cleaners who may not have formal training, giving them recognised standards and best practice procedures to strengthen their credibility and customer trust.
